Election days are here again in Gujarat. Perhaps , this is the first election after social networking sites gain so much popularity in India. Obviously, we can see impact of proliferation of digital media on the election scene. Oratory is like synonym of leadership in India but now debating skills
on TV or catchy updates on blogs or social networking sites are changing the scene rapidly.
Recently, Many public meeting organized by various political party in Surat failed to draw crowed as per their expectations. This is not the exceptional case in Surat. This is happening everywhere. Gone are the days when one could find mammonth crowd at the public meeting. We used to witness jam packed audience in public meeting of stalwarts like Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Ya, it's true that we do not have any alternative of Atal Bihari yet there are leaders who are best at rhetoric. Popularity of Narendra Modi's oratory skill crossed the boundaries of Gujarat. But, it is open secret that there is no spontaneous overflow of enchanted followers of Modi in his public meeting and government machinery have to work overtime to sure that space do not remain empty.
Problem is not the Modi or any other leader but this is the fall out of digital media which alter the scene of election campaigning.
Now, people have blog or twitter post or face book page of Narendra Modi to know what Modi have to say about anyone's girlfriend. One can have live video streaming of Modi's meeting anywhere in the country. Recently, Modi and Ajay Devagan hanged out on Google. So, we know what Modi have to say on each issue or every person any time every where. Now, there is no need to find some extra time and drive away to some extra miles only to face traffic and humiliation by police staff meant for security of Modi.
This scenario is true for any other leaders too. People can track the movement of each leader and hear the views of every parry on television or internet. Live media coverage is now very routine affair.
This has taken toll on public meetings and rallies and door to door contact. All glories of election now snatched away by glittering digital screens. There are only one or two catchy lines in speech of every leader and that we can easily get in the form of tweet or flash sms on our mobile screen. People are interested in just one liners rather than full text of the speech.
Now, number game is not that important if you want to gauge public mood or popularity of any leader. Most of the crowed is manged by government officials or by money managers.. It is now replaced by managed hits or fan numbers.
